Nursing

Without helpers mean nurses, all medical system is a half part. Nursing is very important part of medical science. The nursing profession, comprising of nurses and nursing assistants constitutes the largest working group in the health care sector. Apart from being a highly responsible and noble profession, this profession demands a lot of time, dedication, patience, sacrifice, love and care for the sick patients. It generally suits people, who have a desire to serve and help the physically incapacitated, sick, injured, convalescing mothers, new borne, old persons, even mentally retarded patients etc. With the advancement in medical science, there has been a constant improvement in the nursing education standards.

Courses

  • SC (NURSING): This is a beginner’s course in nursing. In this course the very basic knowledge of this profession is provided like nursing, first aid treatment, midwifery etc. The course also imparts theoretical and practical aspects of nursing.
  • GENERAL NURSING AND MIDWIFERY (GNM/ANM): This course helps in preparing general nurses to hold first-level positions in the hospitals and other such places.
  • AUXILIARY NURSE MIDWIFE AND HEALTH WORKERS: In this programme training is provided to nurses on how to take care of health related needs of the people living in the rural areas especially children, mothers and old persons.
  • Sc (NURSING): This is a two year post graduate degree program in Nursing.

B.Sc. (Nursing)

 This is a degree program in Nursing. This is a four year program. The BSc Nursing course is designed in such a way that it helps students strike a balance between professional and general knowledge. Through the theoretical and practical courses students develop the skills required to take care of people of all ages and all communities, understand the use of medicine and their impact on human health, ability to understand and take control of healthcare problems, to act on emergencies, understanding human behavior and body signs and symptoms and most of all the right kind of attitude that is required for a sensitive profession as nursing. While the BSc Nursing course lasts for a good three years there are also diploma courses in the field for students who do not want to take up an extensive degree course. After completing the course students should register their name with the State Nurse’s Council for employment.

Qualification

            Minimum qualification for this course is 10+2 in physics, chemistry and biology. After doing B.Sc. the candidate is also to take admission to M.Sc. (Nursing).

GNM/ANM

This is a certificate course in nursing. This course helps in preparing general nurses to hold first-level positions in the hospitals and other such places.

Eligibility:

Age is 17 years to 25 years, qualification 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with 40% marks (SC/ST, OBC pass marks in PCB).

Duration of course: 3½ years for General nursing, General nursing midwives, and Male nursing.

Career Options

             According to increasing in health care the demand of nurses is increasing. A nurse can provide his services in many types. A nurse can work with hospital, nursing homes, clinics, military base, health clubs etc. Many students take on jobs at various hospitals and clinics as nurses while some continue to study further and pursue their masters degree and further some do PhD as well. And as the numbers of hospitals, nursing homes, private clinics, sanatoriums’ etc. are increasing day by day, professionally trained and qualified nurses are very much in demand, creating ample of scope in this profession.

Pay/Earnings

 A nurse can earn about to 2 to 2.5 lakh per year or more, it depends upon qualification and experience.  Salary in the government hospitals varies between Rs. 5,500 to Rs. 22,000 as basic salary. On the other hand salaries in private hospitals and clinics are much better. Salaries in this profession also depend on the level of seniority and vary from department to department; it goes up to Rs 1, 00, 000 and more.
